How It Works

ISP or Server

TotalBlock generally works the same whether it's an ISP (using their facilities) or a server (using your facilities). You do have more choices with your own server because you can completely customise TotalBlock's operation, although you can do personal customisation with an ISP.

TotalBlock Technology

TotalBlock uses Identify-Authorise technology. It requires a first time sender to identify themselves as a person in order to send mail to any recipient protected by TotalBlock.

Once a sender is authorised, they need never again go through the Identify-Authorise process, unless they change their email, domain or IP address, of course!

TotalBlock does make life easy for you, the recipient. Any receiver of a mail from you will automatically be authorized. As a result, you may choose to run TotalBlock for a while without blocking so that TotalBlock can build up ("learn") knowledge of your receivers and reduce the number of senders who will be required to identify themselves as human. You wouldn't do this if you are an unfortunate receiver of hundreds of SPAM mails a day; the sooner the rubbish is stopped the better and in this case you would load the allowable sources directly from your address book.

You can also identify senders from the same domain or IP address, so that whole groups of people can automatically be authorised and never know that you are running a SPAM-blocker. You can do this manually; in fact, you can intervene with TotalBlock at any time to authorise or block individuals or groups, or in fact suspend blocking for a period if you are expecting mail from an unknown source, such as a confirmation mail for product that you may have just bought.

Preparing To Use TotalBlock

Ten minutes of thought before you turn blocking on will enable you to leave TotalBlock alone to do its job. Once you start blocking, it's the end of all that unwanted rubbish and pornography; however, you will have folk that you haven't sent mail to for a while, or folk that you have forgotten to register, that will need to identify themselves. This can annoy some people and they may be important. Take a few minutes to make sure that all your important business contacts, friends, newsletters etc are authorised and won't be blocked. You can load your address book, if you wish, although some people choose not to do this.

Of course, you will miss some folk and others will come to you for the first time. If they are important, you can Authorise them with a friendly mail.  TotalBlock keeps a history of all mail activity. If you work for a sales organisation, you may like to look at your history to see what mails have been blocked. The history is condensed and easy to view. You can sort it and see at a glance if there are blocked mails that may be of interest. If you are not running in Defensive Mode (all unwanted mail is blocked at the server), then you may release a mail and authorise (or not), the sender.

Larger organisations will typically run the sales team on a separate server and allow all mail for them to be held. Other parts of the organisation will reject mail from unknown senders at the server, requesting them to Identify themselves and stop the appalling volume of rubbish that besets all Internet users today.

We like TotalBlock, our customers like TotalBlock. Try it today!
